Janakpur is its district headquarters. Janakpur is also a great piligrimage centre for Hindus where Sita(also known as Janaki),the heroine of the great Hindu epic Ramayana, was born. One of the most sacred sites is the Janaki Mandir, dedicated to goddess Sita.
